Biden’s Plan to Upgrade Energy Efficiency and Weatherize Homes

The newly elected Biden-Harris administration plans to focus on energy-efficient homes to achieve a 100 percent clean energy economy with net-zero emissions by 2050. Joe Biden is well aware that smarter energy use is cheap, fast, and a strong defense against the climate crisis. Through this plan, the administration can substantially improve the American lifestyle and make it easier to handle the pandemic, high energy bills, and poor housing conditions.

The President of the United States plans on improving homes in several ways, such as zoning changes to rehabilitating housing in distressed neighborhoods. The new administration plans on boosting the energy efficiency of homes and hopes to reduce energy costs building off of the weatherization assistance efforts of the Department of Energy. They aim to reduce the consumption of energy and improve performance in lower-income households.

What is Weatherization and How Does it Work

Weatherization has been the nation's most extensive single "whole-house" energy efficiency program. Not only does it help households, but it also revitalizes communities by stimulating economic growth and reduces environmental impact.

Through weatherization, the physical aspects of a building to reduce energy costs are improved, there is an increase in efficiency, and health and safety measures are enhanced. Biden planned this strategy around a decade ago, during the Great Recession. Weatherizing homes does not only have climate benefits but can boost the affordability for those who are in need.

Weatherizing homes across the country can address affordability concerns by lowering energy consumption and achieving energy and cost savings.

Biden’s Energy Efficiency Upgrade Plan

The plan by Joe Biden is worth $2 trillion and includes measures to build affordable, energy-efficient homes. Biden’s American Jobs Plan is funded by corporate tax increases and would allocate $213 billion to develop, preserve, and install more than 2 million affordable and sustainable places to live. The plan calls on Congress to fund electrified new homes and projects, rehabilitate homes for low- and middle-income people, and extend tax credits to spur efficiency in buildings.

The plan to upgrade energy efficiency in homes will take place with the help of block grant programs, the Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program, and expanded tax credits.

Equitable Housing

There is an ongoing crisis on affordable housing in the United States. Therefore, the Biden-Harris administration must place emergency relief and encourage Congress to pass the HEROES Act, which comprises rental, energy, and water assistance.

Biden plans to build 1.5 million homes and public housing units that keep the affordable housing crisis in mind while increasing energy efficiency and reducing the racial wealth gap through equitable housing.

Conclusion

The new Biden-Harris administration is aware of how investing in America's homes, and buildings can benefit families and businesses. They plan on investing in communities that need help the most. Their plan to upgrade energy efficiency and weatherize homes can create affordable housing for many.
